More Singing Tips (Provided by Krazy Kats Karaoke)

Using A Microphone

  • If using a microphone stand make sure it is at a comfortable height for you to sing into before starting - mucking about with it during a song will be distracting to you and the audience.
  • When using a microphone with a lead attached, ensure that the lead is firmly attached to the microphone and you are not standing on the loose cable.
  • Check the on/off switch! Some mics have a small switch which moves easily - this can be turned off by accident when you grip the microphone or the previous singer may have turned it off.
  • Hold the microphone by the handle, don't cover the pickup with your hand or fingers and keep the microphone at a distance of 1/2" - 1" away from your mouth - holding it too close to your mouth or covering the pickup causes your voice and the words to sound muffled, distorted and indistinct.

Overcoming Stagefright

Prepare all your work thoroughly. Knowing your job will greatly reduce your anxiety.

Remember that the audience wants you to do well! Most people want you to succeed; keep that in your mind.

Dedicating the song to one person in particular is helpful. Keep that person in mind while you sing and it will help you sing with true emotion and not focus on yourself so much.

When you look out at the people listening to you, don't look at people who make you nervous. Try to find the people who make you feel safe

Preparation

Visualization before you get on stage is key to help you with this anticipation. Visualize a smiling happy crowd after a job well done.

Practice a form of relaxation EVERY day - whether it be stretching, yoga, walking, deep breathing - any activity that truly relaxes your body and mind. Sleep does not count :)
